Customs Board approves  De Minimis Threshold to boost Trade facilitation

By Babatunde Aremu

The Nigeria Customs Service Board has approved a $300 De Minimis Threshold for low-value imports, e-commerce consignments, and passenger baggage, effective September 8, 2025.

A statement issued and signed by customs Spokesperson, Dr. Abdullahi Maiwada on Sunday said This decision aims to simplify clearance processes, enhance trade facilitation, and provide clarity for e-commerce stakeholders and travelers.

According to the new policy, goods valued at $300 or less will be exempt from import duties and taxes, provided they’re not prohibited or restricted items. However, there’s a limitation of four importations per annum for eligible goods.

The Nigeria Customs Service has also affirmed it’s commitment to establish multi-channel helpdesk platforms to support the smooth implementation of the De Minimis regulation. These platforms will provide timely guidance on compliance requirements, address inquiries, and resolve complaints.

In a related development, the Customs Board has issued a stern warning to officers against unethical behavior, emphasizing that misconduct will not be tolerated. Two officers were demoted to the next lower rank for misconduct and must undergo a mandatory medical re-evaluation to determine their fitness to remain in the service. This move underscores the Board’s commitment to maintaining discipline and professionalism within the service.

The introduction of the De Minimis Threshold is expected to boost trade facilitation, reduce clearance times, and enhance the overall efficiency of the customs process. It will also provide relief to travelers and e-commerce stakeholders, allowing them to import low-value goods with greater ease.
