Yusuf Ali ,SAN, Dele Adesina SAN,  others urge FG to tackle terrorism, eradicate corruption at Gavel international Annual lecture

The Federal Government has been advised to tackle terrorism and eradicate corruption to ensure smooth orderliness in the country .

Mr. Yusuf Ali SAN  made this call in his keynote address at the Gavel international Annual lecture and awards held in Lagos on Tuesday.

Speaking on the theme of the lecture:  The impact of National security policies on vulnerable communities: A Human rights perspective, Mr. Ali  said the federal Government needs to address the basic fundamentals and real cause of insecurity so as to arrive at a solution to the problem.

Legal practitioner and senior advocate of Nigeria, Mr. Dele Adesina and other members of the panel of Discussants submitted that the 1999 constitution is no longer suitable for the efficient and smooth running of Nigeria.

They advocate for the change of the constitution to ensure respect for the law, promote justice for all and address the route cause of terrorism in the country.

“Those who are not killed by Terrorists are killed by Hunger. We need to we need to address poverty and unemployment. We need to embrace Decency . Here in Nigeria we have the policy of when you Drive you don’t hold phone But how many people obey the policy “– they said

Mr. Tayo Oyetibo urged Government to devote more attention to food security so as to reduce the level of poverty and hunger in the country.

Other participants at the lecture identified Greed and corruption and lack of corruption and reward system as clog in the wheel of implementation of policies in Nigeria .

“We are talking of Human rights. It is only in this country that a minister is alleged to have forged a certificate and the only punishment is that he has resigned. Look at the salary of a Senator and House if representatives member it is much Higher than that of the civil servant ”

Mr. Mustapha Adekunle Ogunsakiin , the Convener of the lecture and Publisher of Gavel international in his welcome address pointed out that while innocent lives are lost daily , the political class focuses on the 2027 elections, neglecting urgent security needs .

” The political class must unite beyond partisanship and rise to confront this existential threat , advancing beyond the legacies of past republics and military regimes”- He said

For the commissioner of information, Lagos State, Gbenga Omotoso who was represented at the lecture he said security is the foundation upon which society thrives. He emphasized that no meaningful Human rights can succeed without security. He assured that the Lagos State Government has adopted a people centred approach through the Lagos security thrust fund .

The lecture featured the presentation of award planks to the Discussants  to the keynote speaker Yusuf Ali SAN, Dele Adesina SAN, commissioner for information, Lagos State and other recipients of the 2025 Gavel international Annual lecture and awards.
