Customs to Launch State-of-the-Art Scanner at Apapa Port

By Babatunde Aremu

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) is making final preparations for the operational launch of its newly installed FS6000 scanning machine at APM Terminals, Apapa, Lagos. According to reports, the scanner is expected to enhance paperless cargo clearance, trade facilitation, and operational efficiency.

Deputy Comptroller-General of Customs in charge of ICT, DCG Oluyomi Adebakin, recently visited the scanning site to ensure a smooth transition to full scanning operations. During his visit, DCG Adebakin assessed the level of readiness, which currently stands at about 80 percent. The remaining 20 percent is expected to be completed before the commissioning of the scanner.

The new scanning technology will eliminate physical documentation, reduce cargo clearance time, and enhance transparency and compliance. The scanner’s installation is part of the Service’s broader push for paperless cargo clearance, trade facilitation, and improved operational efficiency. Once fully operational, the scanners will significantly reduce the need for intrusive physical examinations, enhance national security, and support the Comptroller-General’s push for end-to-end digitalisation across Customs operations.

The NCS, APM Terminals, and the Trade Modernisation Project (TMP) are working together to ensure a seamless transition to the scanning system. This collaboration underscores the commitment of all parties to enhancing trade facilitation and revenue collection at the Apapa Port. With the launch of the scanner, the NCS is poised to improve its operations and provide better services to stakeholders.
