Oyebamiji Reveals FG’s N14.6 Billion Boat Procurement for Riverine Areas

By Babatunde Aremu

The Federal Government has approved a whopping ₦14.6 billion for the procurement of modern boats and ferries to enhance safety, trade, and passenger transportation on Nigeria’s inland waterways.

Former Managing Director of National inland waterways Authority and APC Governorship Candidate in Osun State, Bola Oyebamijii made this disclosure on Thursday in Osogbo while receiving a coalition of Maritime journalists in his campaign office.

According to Oyebamiji, the acquired boats and ferries will be distributed to riverine states such as Niger, Benue, Kogi, Kwara, and Kebbi. This move is expected to reduce reliance on unsafe craft and improve food supply chains by ensuring faster and cheaper movement of farm produce from rural communities to urban market.

During his tenure at NIWA, Oyebamiji initiated several projects that added substantial value to the agency’s operations. One of his notable achievements was the establishment of Community Stakeholders committees, comprising local chiefs, community leaders, and opinion moulders, which acted as first responders in emergencies and safety advocates. He also introduced a Water Transportation Code and deployed water marshals to monitor critical loading and offloading point.

The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, has emphasized the need to phase out wooden boats in favor of fibre and aluminum vessels to enhance safety on the waterways. This initiative is expected to reduce the risk of accidents and improve the overall safety of passengers and goods.
