The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has made a significant seizure of ₦4.7 billion worth of cannabis at the Tincan Island Port Command in Lagos. The seizure was made after an intensive physical examination of a 40-foot container, which was found to contain 55 jumbo bags of Cannabis Indica alongside a firearm.
According to Comptroller Frank Onyeka, the Customs Area Controller, the examination was conducted on January 28, 2026, in collaboration with officers of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and the Department of State Services (DSS). The seized narcotics comprised 2,366 compressed packages with a combined weight of 1,183 kilograms. A Colt’s MK IV / Series 70 .45 automatic pistol with an empty magazine was also recovered.
The illicit items were cleverly concealed inside three used vehicles: a Hyundai Santa Fe, a Toyota Sienna, and a Toyota Matrix. One suspect has been arrested in connection with the seizure. The Customs Area Controller commended the Comptroller-General of Customs for his leadership and continuous support, which has strengthened inter-agency cooperation and operational effectiveness.
The seized drugs will be formally handed over to the NDLEA for further investigation and prosecution, while the recovered firearm will be transferred to the appropriate security agency. The NCS has reaffirmed its zero-tolerance policy for drug trafficking and transnational crime, assuring the public of sustained vigilance across all ports of entry.
