By Babatunde Aremu
Nigeria will on Friday, October 16, join the global maritime community to commemorate the World Maritime Day 2026, with stakeholders expected to focus on translating maritime policies into concrete results and unlocking the country’s Blue Economy potential.
The celebration, with the theme “From Policy to Practice: Powering Maritime Excellence,” is expected to be declared open by the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, CON.
The theme highlights the need for effective implementation of maritime policies, stronger regulatory frameworks, innovation and improved outcomes for seafarers and other stakeholders in the sector.
As part of the commemoration, Mrs. Mfon Ekong Usoro will deliver a keynote presentation titled “From Policy to Practice: Strengthening Nigeria’s Blue Economy.”
The presentation is expected to examine practical strategies for improving the performance of Nigeria’s maritime industry and harnessing the country’s vast maritime resources for sustainable economic development.
The organisers said the event would provide an opportunity for key industry stakeholders to strengthen collaboration and advance efforts towards achieving greater efficiency and excellence in the maritime sector.
They stressed that Nigeria’s maritime future would depend not only on the formulation of sound policies but also on their effective implementation, collaboration among stakeholders and the delivery of measurable results.
The World Maritime Day commemoration is therefore expected to reinforce the importance of moving from policy formulation to practical action in order to maximise the opportunities presented by Nigeria’s Blue Economy.
