Apapa Customs Seizes N3.39bn Codeine Shipment in Fresh Crackdown

By Babatunde Aremu

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Apapa Area Command, has intercepted two containers containing 3,398 cartons (339,800 bottles) of codeine-containing syrup, valued at N3.39 billion, at Apapa Port. The shipment was concealed in household utensils and seized in collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

According to reports, the containers, MRKU 3816476 and TGBU 5399178, were found to contain 1,700 cartons (170,000 bottles) and 1,698 cartons (169,800 bottles) of codeine-containing syrup, respectively. Both containers have been converted to seizure under the Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023.

Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Emmanuel Oshoba, stated that the seizure demonstrates the command’s commitment to the Comptroller-General’s directives and vision. “This fresh seizure, coming just five days after the CGC’s visit and strong warning to criminal elements, is a direct response to his charge on us,” Oshoba said.

The NDLEA has been commended for its seamless collaboration and unwavering support in the successful operation. The Apapa Area Command remains steadfast in its resolve to protect public health, safeguard national security, and facilitate only legitimate trade.
