Customs Crackdown Yields Results: Contraband Cargo Declines at Tin-Can Island Port

The Tin-Can Island Port has recorded a significant decline in contraband cargo, thanks to the efforts of the Nigeria Customs Service. The Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi described the decline as a result of improved border security and trade compliance.
The Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Frank Onyeka, has maintained the system put in place by his predecessor and recorded robust improvements. He attributed the decline in contraband cargo to increased stakeholder compliance and a new compliance culture.
KEY STATISTICS:
– 5-10 times improvement in safety adjustment comparison
– Decline in importation of controlled medications, arms, and ammunition
– Reduction in trafficking of contraband goods
TRADE FACILITATION:
The Comptroller General of Customs emphasized the importance of trade facilitation in contributing to national development and global services. The Advance Ruling System and Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) Programme have enhanced efficiencies and created a new trade ecosystem.
The AEO Programme has catalyzed a new regime of fast-track cargo clearance, benchmarked on post-clearance audit for safe valve and necessary adjustments. The Nigeria Customs Service’s efforts have yielded positive results, with a more secure and efficient trade environment emerging at the Tin-Can Island Port.
