Nigeria Customs Service Transitions to Authorised Economic Operator Programme for Enhanced Trade Facilitation

By Babatunde Aremu

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) is upgrading its trade facilitation program by transitioning from the Fast Track Scheme to the Authorized Economic Operator (AEO) Programme.

A statement issued and signed by customs Spokesperson Abdullahi Maiwada on Friday said this strategic move aims to align Nigeria’s customs procedures with international best practices, enhancing trade efficiency and security.

According to the statement the AEO Programme is a structured initiative that offers trusted traders who meet specified compliance, financial, and security criteria a certain level of priority treatment in Customs processes. Benefits include pre-arrival clearance, minimal inspection, expedited release, and potential mutual recognition with other customs administrations.

Key highlights of the AEO Programme include reduced clearance times, lower costs, increased predictability, and improved supply chain security. The programme has shown promising results during its pilot phase, with participating companies experiencing significant growth in trade value and revenue contribution.

The NCS has launched the AEO programme, opening registration for eligible companies. This development is expected to further streamline trade processes, boost economic activity, and reinforce Nigeria’s position in global trade.
