Outgoing Customs Area Controller of Tincan Island Port Command, Assistant Comptroller-General F.O. Onyeka, has formally handed over leadership of the Command after recording over ₦1.6 trillion in revenue and seizing illicit goods worth more than ₦35 billion during his tenure.
Speaking at the handover ceremony on Friday, 22 May 2026, Onyeka described the moment as “emotional and historic,” saying it marked the end of a challenging but rewarding chapter in his career in the Nigeria Customs Service.
“Through the dedication, professionalism, and commitment of officers and men of this Command, we were able to generate a total revenue of ₦1,609,874,328,972.55 for the 2025 fiscal year, surpassing our target of ₦1,524,669,999,478.52,” he said. For the first quarter of 2026, the Command had already collected ₦401,011,998,443.71.
He attributed the performance to intelligence-driven operations, improved compliance strategies, stakeholder engagement, and the deployment of modern trade facilitation tools that balanced enforcement with legitimate trade.
On enforcement, Onyeka said the Command made significant breakthroughs in intercepting illicit drugs and other prohibited items with an estimated street value exceeding ₦35 billion. “These seizures underscore our resolve to protect the nation from criminal networks and safeguard the health, security, and future of our society,” he stated.
He noted that his administration prioritized stakeholder engagement with freight forwarders, terminal operators, shipping companies, importers, exporters, and other government agencies to improve efficiency and compliance at the port. The Command also invested in capacity building and supported the Customs Officers’ Wives Association’s humanitarian programs.
Onyeka expressed appreciation to the Comptroller-General of Customs and Chairman of the World Customs Organization Council, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR, PhD psc(+), for his leadership and support. He also thanked the Command’s management team, officers, and men for their loyalty and sacrifices.
As he handed over to Comptroller Joe Anani, Onyeka expressed confidence in his successor’s capacity to sustain and surpass the achievements recorded. He urged stakeholders and officers to extend the same cooperation to the new Controller.
“I shall always remain available for consultation and support. Tincan Island Port Command will always hold a special place in my heart,” he said.
The handover marks another leadership transition in the Service’s ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening revenue collection, trade facilitation, and national security.
