APPEAL COURT RULES AGAINST KWANKWASO, REAFFIRMS ANIEBONAM AS NNPP LEADER

By Babatunde Aremu

The Court of Appeal in Owerri has removed Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), reinstating Dr. Boniface Okechukwu Aniebonam as the undisputed leader of the party.

The judgment sets aside a ruling by the Abia State High Court, Uzuakoli, which had earlier favored Kwankwaso. The Appeal Court upheld Aniebonam’s appeal, citing that the lower court erred in its decision.

Aniebonam founded the NNPP in 2001 and had been engaged in a leadership struggle with Kwankwaso, who was granted the party’s presidential ticket in 2023 but sought to hijack the party.

The court ruling has ended Kwankwaso’s attempts to take over the party, with Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State reportedly concerned about the move.
