Nigeria @66: NNSS Abeokuta Celebrates Independence, Tasks Youth on Nation Building

The Nigerian Navy Secondary School (NNSS), Abeokuta, Ogun State*, has joined millions of Nigerians at home and abroad to celebrate *Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary*, highlighting the critical role of youth in nation building.

The colourful celebration, held within the school premises, brought together students, staff and members of the school community in a display of patriotism, discipline and national pride.

With the theme *“Raising Future Leaders,”* the event focused on nurturing responsible, disciplined and patriotic young Nigerians as the bedrock of Nigeria’s future.

The ceremony featured students in school and ceremonial outfits, while cadets participated in activities that reflected core naval values of discipline, leadership, patriotism and service.

Addressing the gathering, the *Commandant of the School, Captain O. A. Adesiyan*, said Independence Day is not only an occasion to celebrate nationhood but also an opportunity to reflect on the hopes, aspirations and responsibilities of the younger generation.

According to her, the future of Nigeria is closely tied to the quality of education, values and leadership instilled in its youth, stressing that adequate preparation for future responsibilities is non-negotiable.

She urged students to embrace discipline, responsibility, patriotism and service to the nation, noting that young people will determine the direction of the country in years to come.

The Commandant emphasised the need to create an enabling environment where young Nigerians can develop talents, acquire relevant knowledge and build character required to contribute positively to national development.

_“The responsibility of building a better Nigeria extends beyond government and institutions. Young people must be prepared to contribute meaningfully through conduct, education, leadership and commitment,”_ she stated.

The celebration served not only as an Independence Day event but also as a reminder to students of their responsibilities as future leaders and citizens.

For the students, the occasion was an opportunity to demonstrate a sense of belonging to the Nigerian nation while reflecting on the significance of independence and sacrifices that shaped the country’s 66-year journey.

The school’s emphasis on leadership development aligns with its mandate of providing sound academic training while instilling discipline, character and values of responsible citizenship.

Through academic and extracurricular activities, *NNSS Abeokuta* continues to prepare students for future responsibilities across various fields of endeavour, reinforcing the belief that Nigeria’s development is inseparable from youth development and empowerment.

The event concluded on a note of hope and optimism as the school extended Independence greetings to Nigerians worldwide and reaffirmed its commitment to raising young Nigerians who uphold discipline, patriotism, leadership and serviice.
