Lagos, Nigeria – June 23, 2026 – The Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) on Tuesday celebrated the retirement of the Head of its Complaints Unit, Dr. Bashir Alhassan Ambi-Mohammed, bringing to a close an illustrious 26-year career marked by professionalism, integrity and dedicated service to Nigeria’s maritime sector.

The colourful ceremony, which coincided with his birthday, drew management staff, colleagues, family members, friends and industry stakeholders to the Council’s headquarters in Lagos to honour a man widely respected for his commitment to public service and dispute resolution.

Leading the tributes, the Chairman of the Occasion and Director of Strategic Planning and Research at the NSC, Mr. Rotimi Anifowose, described Dr. Ambi-Mohammed as one of the Council’s most dependable officers whose contributions would remain indelible in the history of the organisation.

Anifowose recalled serving on the interview panel that recruited the retiring officer more than two decades ago, noting that the decision had turned out to be one of the best ever made by the Council.

“I can proudly say that the interview panel made at least one very good decision. We got that one absolutely right,” he said.

Reflecting on Dr. Ambi-Mohammed’s career progression, Anifowose praised his calm disposition, fairness and professionalism in handling complaints and mediating disputes among stakeholders.

“It is fitting that a man who spent years resolving other people’s complaints is leaving without giving anyone a reason to complain about his own service,” he remarked, drawing applause from guests.

Dr. Ambi-Mohammed joined the Nigerian Shippers’ Council in 2000 as a Public Relations Officer after beginning his professional career with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation’s Pipelines and Products Marketing Company (PPMC).

Over the years, he served in several strategic capacities, including Personal Assistant to former NSC Governing Board Chairmen and the late Capt. Adamu A. Biu, a former Executive Secretary of the Council. He later worked in the Consumer Affairs Department before rising through the ranks to become Head of the Complaints Unit.

His impressive academic and professional credentials also earned admiration from colleagues and stakeholders alike. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication from the University of Maiduguri, Master’s degrees in Mass Communication and International Transport, as well as M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees in Mass Communication. He is also a Certified Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Practitioner and a Fellow of both the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) and the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR).

Beyond his official responsibilities, Dr. Ambi-Mohammed played significant leadership roles within and outside the Council. He served as General Secretary and later President of the NSC Staff Cooperative Society, where he contributed immensely to strengthening the cooperative’s financial base. He also served two terms as Chairman of the Lagos State Branch of CILT Nigeria and currently serves as General Secretary of the Lagos State Chapter of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations.

In recognition of his exemplary service and dedication to excellence, he received several honours, including the NSC ACTU/ICPC Integrity Award.

Speakers at the event described Dr. Ambi-Mohammed as a humble, disciplined and visionary administrator whose legacy of integrity and service will continue to inspire future generations of maritime professionals.

The ceremony ended with the presentation of gifts, goodwill messages and prayers for a fulfilling and rewarding retirement.
